Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine has existed for more than two thousand years and is one of the oldest medical systems still in use today. Its practice is rooted in the ancient Chinese philosophy of Daoism and theories such as Yin Yang and Five Elements (Wu Xing) are central to its practice.
The main disciplines of TCM are Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage) and Cupping but other treatments such as Qi Gong and Food Therapy also come under its umbrella making it a holistic system with the flexibility to treat a variety of health conditions, both chronic and acute.
Tom started his journey with Chinese Medicine when he began studying Shaolin Kung Fu at the age of fourteen. After numerous injuries and experiences with various therapies he was inspired to learn Chinese Medicine after experiencing the effectiveness of the treatment firsthand. Consequently, a keen interest has developed in treating muscular-skeletal disorders. Other areas of interest include gastrointestinal disorders and stress related conditions.
Tom graduated from Middlesex University with a First Class BSc (Hons) in Traditional Chinese Medicine and also received an award from the ATCM (Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine) for his studies.
His practice focuses on the core concepts of TCM including ‘Bian Zheng Lun Zhi’ (treatment according to syndrome differentiation) based on the Eight Principle Patterns, Zang Fu diagnosis, Fundamental Substances and the External Invasion of Climatic Factors. This is ascertained through the four examinations including inquiry, the observation of the tongue and palpation of the pulse. After a diagnosis is made, treatment is undertaken to readjust and harmonise the body so healing can take place.
As part of his TCM subjects at Middlesex University he was also required to have a solid grounding in anatomy and physiology, western pathology and western medical diagnostics and as such, incorporates them into his practice when deemed necessary.
As a member of the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tom is bound to the association’s code of practice and code of professional conduct as well as covered by medical malpractice and public liability insurance.

“Yin and Yang and the four seasons are the beginning and end of all things, the root of life and death. To go against them is injurious to life; to go with them prevents serious diseases from arising.” — Suwen, Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine.
