Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui (d. 1926). Dr Usui had a life-changing experience of light and energy that he recognized as Reiki (sacred life force). Fired by a burning question, Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.
There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed.
In a Reiki healing session, the practitioner, trained to access and serve as a channel for the life force (ki, qi or chi), places his/her hands on or just above the client’s body in order to activate healing energy within receptive points on the body.
The practitioner’s hands move progressively with a passive touch through twelve positions on the body, remaining in each position for three to five minutes. The practitioner’s hands channel healing energies to the client. As a harmonic flow of energy is strengthened, within the client and practitioner, healing occurs through the return of physical, mental, and spiritual balance.
Reiki is commonly used to treat emotional and mental distress as well as chronic and acute physical problems, and to assist the recipient in achieving spiritual focus and clarity. However, you do not need to be ill to benefit from Reiki: many people use it for personal growth or as a regular way to tune in to the life force, so regenerating themselves. Anyone who has a sincere desire to help people to heal can be taught to channel Reiki energy and be given Reiki attunements. Special symbols are used and these have been handed down from Usui in a direct Reiki lineage.
