Hypnotherapy is an effective way of changing unhelpful habits, behaviour or emotional thinking styles and encouraging new patterns to be laid down to create a happier, fulfilling and more successful lifestyle. These patterns are stored within the instinctive part of mind also known as our unconscious thought.
Interestingly, it is this instinctive part which occupies around 90% of our mind and it’s also the ‘control centre’ for our breathing, regulating temperature, digesting our food, all functions which are completed for us automatically without thinking about it. Hypnosis is one of the few therapies that can actually bypass the conscious mind and connect with the unconscious to update those desired changes.
Hypnotherapy is also solution focused which means that we agree a strategy and work towards achieving those goals within an agreed timescale. Rather than delving into problems of the past, hypnotherapy puts the spotlight on the present, and explores the very real possibility of things going right for you from the moment we get started.
Hypnosis or trance is a naturally occurring process in everyday thoughts and actions. It can be defined as a focused state of attention during which wider stimuli are ignored. For example, have you ever been engrossed in an interesting book or a fascinating film to the point that you almost forget everything else happening around you? Or perhaps you have been driving from one place to another but realised you can’t actually remember how you got there? In hypnosis, you can still think logically but you also have access to the ‘software’ of your mind so that you can update instinctive emotional and physical responses.
Throughout our session, you will remain completely aware and in control of everything that is going on. In fact, many people experience a hyper awareness where sounds appear richer, thoughts become clearer and your ability to imagine and visualise is far greater in this state.
What is hypnotherapy good for?
- Reducing stress levels related to work, health, relationships, lifestyle
- Achieving goals that are not responding to willpower alone – stopping smoking, losing weight, cutting down on alcohol, reducing spending
- Changing negative or depressive thinking styles or behaviours
- Coming to terms with life changing events, e.g. death, divorce, redundancy, illness
- Overcoming anxiety or phobias that have been holding you back from enjoying your potential
Frequently asked questions about hypnotherapy
I’ve tried so many different things already – how can I be sure hypnotherapy is going to work?
Have you ever wondered why, after numerous attempts to change a habit or pattern of behaviour, it fails or resurfaces again? This is because willpower alone operates at the conscious level of our mind and the key to making real and lasting change lies within the unconscious mind which can only be accessed through hypnosis. Conscious thought represents only around 10% of our mind whilst the subconscious or unconscious part of our mind occupies up to 90%. It is this part that dictates our automatic thoughts, behaviours, emotions and responses. Therefore, it makes sense that if we access the `control centre` of our minds, we can achieve positive and lasting change.
What if I don’t think I can be hypnotised?
If I asked you to imagine yourself sitting quite cosily in front of a roaring log fire with its flickering, orange and red glow and what it might be like to feel that warmth on the hands and hear the familiar crackling sound that the wood sometimes makes as it burns, you’d probably be able to get a sense of this in your mind right now. This is your imagination working for you and if you can imagine, then you can go into trance because hypnosis is simply a state of deeply focused attention. It is true that some people can go deeper into trance than others but everyone has the ability with the right guidance to enter into this state sufficiently enough to produce positive, lasting change.
Will I lose control?
It still makes me smile when I hear this question and the answer is no – absolutely not! If you think about it, one of the reasons for guiding someone into hypnosis is so that you can be more in control of patterns of behaviour within your life both consciously and unconsciously. One of the wonderful things about going into trance is the ability to let the conscious mind have a complete rest whilst picking up the reins of the unconscious mind.
