More and more people are now choosing to come for counselling when faced with difficult or painful times in their lives. Counselling provides you with a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental therapeutic space in which to explore what is happening in your life with a professionally trained person who is independent and separate from people who you know in everyday life. Though friends, colleagues and family members are often our usual sources of support, sometimes they can be too close, inappropriate, or sometimes part of the difficulty or dilemma.

Counselling means different things to different people, and is an experience that is unique to each individual. There may be a particular crisis that brings people into counselling, though often there might be nothing more specific than a strong sense that underpinning your life are general feelings of emptiness, discontent and dissatisfaction. What happens in counselling sessions will vary according to what you bring and what works for you. Underlying the counselling process, however, is a very real encounter between client and counsellor in which both are engaged in the process of exploring the issues that you bring.

Talking openly and in confidence with a trained counsellor who listens with respect and understanding is an essential part of that process, and can help to clarify problems and challenges, increase self awareness, and gain fresh perspectives on life. Whilst counselling can assist people to make important changes in life, equally it can help people live more creatively with situations that cannot easily be changed.
