What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy uses gentle rolling type moves over specific areas of the body designed to disturb the underlying fascia, muscles and organs to bring about a response in the body towards healing, wellbeing and balance. Most of these moves can be performed through light clothing, making Bowen a suitable therapy for everyone from the newborn to athletes to the elderly and disabled. Between each set of moves there are short pauses or breaks of a few minutes allowing the appropriate response to take place within the body. Bowen is generally relaxing and pleasant to receive, with a session typically lasting up to an hour.
Bowen does not treat specific conditions, instead it is a tool used by the practitioner to allow communication between the Central and Autonomic Nervous Systems. The Central Nervous System gives information to the brain, the brain then interprets that and sends it back to the body. We also have the Autonomic Nervous System (made up of the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems). These two systems don’t always see eye-to-eye and sometimes the brain sends out information or pain signals interpreted by the body as pain, discomfort, restriction etc without underlying damage or cause to do so. Bowen is sensory information that acts as a communicator between the Autonomic Nervous System and the Central Nervous System. The brain can then decide if it wants to continue putting out these signals or adapt them and change behaviour.
Bowen treatment works on particularly stressed loading points in the body, “function junctions” where many muscles, fibres and functions meet. Everything going on in those areas has an individual pathway to the brain that can then deal with all this information. After a series of Bowen moves, the practitioner then steps away from the body (leaves the room) allowing a few minutes pause for the brain and body to respond.
Bowen Therapy is a drug free, non invasive, remedial therapy for pain relief and relaxation. Bowen is not massage, acupressure or chiropractic. There is no manipulation, adjustment or force used but instead treatment involves a sequence of gentle moves over muscle and soft tissue, interspersed with periods of rest. It is an unusual form of bodywork, in that the moves are performed in specific locations on the body, followed by pauses of several minutes between sets of moves, to allow the body to integrate the effects of the work.
Bowen Therapy is undoubtedly unique as it utilizes the body’s own capacity to re-balance and heal itself and as such can be highly effective in treating people suffering from a vast range of conditions. It is therefore also suitable for clients of all ages from babies to the elderly and can be an ideal therapy for pregnant women and people suffering from chronic or acute pain.
“Some call it a mysterious method, some call it nothing short of miraculous”
Bear Grylls, the adventurer, was plagued by back pain for over 10 years and more worryingly also suffered from high levels of cholesterol. He finds the Bowen Technique to be a very effective treatment.
He says “I was sceptical, but wanted to keep an open mind. With the slightest squiggle of the Bowen Therapists fingers, it felt like petrol was being put back in my tank and I could feel all the stress seeping away.”
Bear Grylls now describes himself ‘hooked’ and has Bowen Therapy every month.
