CBD has been a hot topic in the press recently. Opinions on the topic are strong, and you know we don’t shy away from an opinion. As part of our mission to empower you to take control of your wellbeing, we want to give you an understanding of what CBD is and what it does.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a chemical compound from the cannabis plant. Crucially, however, cannabis has two main elements – CBD and THC – and it is THC that is the active ingredient in marijuana and has the psychoactive properties. CBD is a non-psychoactive substance and doesn’t cause euphoria, sedation or altered mental states. That said, around 5% of people do feel slightly altered after consuming CBD, and you never know how your body will react to any new supplement the first time you take it, so it’s best to consider this when trying it for the first time, and to make sure you are taking a high quality, tested product.

How can CBD help?

There have been many reported benefits of CBD. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities, making it effective at relieving pain and muscle strain, as well as reducing skin problems. Many people also find CBD improves their mood, and reduces depression and anxiety, as well as helping to alleviate insomnia. Due to its therapeutic effect on the brain and central nervous system, it has been reported that CBD can be beneficial for epilepsy, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Several studies have also suggested that CBD could be extremely valuable in fighting cancer.

Is CBD safe?

As mentioned above, CBD does not have the intoxicating effects associated with THC and marijuana, and has no reported side effects. Why, then, is it not more actively supported by the medical profession?

The link between CBD and marijuana worries some people. Amongst government bodies, medical organisations and law enforcement circles there is concern that introduction to CBD could lead to marijuana use. Confusion about the relationship between the two and lack of understanding about the effects of CBD has contributed to a certain amount of fear amongst doctors, politicians and police about the product being widely available.

Is CBD natural?

All animals, including humans, actually have an endocannabinoid system in their bodies. This network of cannabinoid receptors helps all the body’s systems work together. In humans, the endocannabinoid system affects sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation, memory, mood, and even reproduction. Which explains the many positive benefits of CBD.

Far from being afraid of CBD and its link to THC, the powers that be should be embracing CBD’s relationship to our natural systems and recognising the widespread impact of these products.
