Health and WellbeingHealing is something we practice in the ordinary moments—when life feels uncertain, when old wounds are touched, and when we’re invited to meet ourselves with honesty instead of perfection.
Returning from Bali reminded me that healing isn’t a destination we arrive at. It’s something we practice in the ordinary moments—when life feels uncertain, when old wounds are touched, and when we’re invited to meet ourselves with honesty instead of perfection.
The greatest gift I received wasn’t another technique, but a deeper appreciation that presence itself is medicine. Whether through sound, stillness, or compassionate listening, healing begins when we allow ourselves to be exactly where we are.
As I settled back into life in the UK, I was reminded that the real practice begins when we return home. We step back into our routines, relationships, responsibilities and the parts of ourselves that still long to be seen. Healing is not about becoming someone new. It is about remembering who we are beneath the noise.
Today, I’d like to offer a simple practice that you can return to whenever life feels overwhelming.
Five Tips for Coming Home to Yourself
- Be still.
Even if it’s only for five minutes, allow yourself to pause. Switch off distractions, soften your gaze or close your eyes, and simply notice your breath. Stillness is not empty—it creates space for your inner wisdom to be heard.
- Create sacred time.
You don’t need an elaborate ceremony. Light a candle, sit in nature, wrap yourself in a blanket, or simply choose a quiet corner where you won’t be disturbed. Let your body know that, for these moments, nothing is more important than being present with yourself.
- Ask five gentle questions.
Rather than searching for answers with your mind, allow your body to respond. You may wish to place a hand over different parts of your body—your heart, belly, throat, or anywhere that calls your attention—and simply notice what arises.
You could ask:
- What am I feeling right now?
- What am I holding onto that I am ready to release?
- What part of me needs kindness today?
- What is my body trying to tell me?
- What small step would support my healing today?
Write whatever comes without editing or judging. There are no right or wrong answers.
- Listen with curiosity.
Sometimes your heart speaks differently from your mind. Sometimes your belly carries fear while your shoulders hold responsibility. Allow each part of your body to have a voice. You may be surprised by the wisdom that emerges when you stop trying to figure everything out.
- End with gratitude.
Before returning to your day, thank yourself for showing up. Healing isn’t measured by breakthroughs. Often, it is found in the quiet courage of simply being willing to listen.
Healing isn’t about fixing ourselves. It is about cultivating a relationship with ourselves that is rooted in compassion, presence and love.
As the beautiful teacher Ram Dass once said, “We’re all just walking each other home.” Perhaps healing is simply remembering that home has always been within us.
