Meet the Team

Multibed acupuncture is a calm, community approach to treatment. It is a personalised session, but in a shared space, where you can relax and be healed at an affordable price.

The Benefits of MultiBed Acupuncture: A Calm, Community Approach to Treatment

If you’ve never experienced acupuncture in a multibed clinic, the idea of sharing a treatment room with other patients might sound unusual. You may wonder whether you’ll have enough privacy, whether the treatment will feel rushed, or whether you’ll be able to properly relax.

At Anahata, we’ve found that multibed acupuncture can offer something quite special: professional, personalised acupuncture in a calm, supportive environment, with the added benefit of making treatment more accessible.

I love working in our acupuncture multibed clinic. It has a lovely community feel. My colleagues and I all graduated from the same college, we use the same points manual, and we can lean on each other for treatment ideas – or even for sharing a hair band!

What is multibed acupuncture?

A multibed acupuncture clinic is a treatment space where several acupuncture couches are set up in the same room. Rather than each practitioner having a separate treatment room, acupuncturists work alongside one another and treat several patients within the same space.

At Anahata, practitioners generally see a new patient approximately every 30 minutes. We take time to listen to what is happening, assess the person in front of us and adapt their treatment accordingly. Once the needles are in place and the patient is settled, we can move on to another patient before returning to check on them and eventually remove the needles.

Although the clinic operates in a shared space, this doesn’t mean that treatment is rushed or impersonal.

We take time to listen to what our patients need, locate acupuncture points carefully and accurately, and use techniques such as gentle moxa when appropriate. Each person’s treatment is considered individually.

Can you relax during a multibed acupuncture treatment?

This is one of the questions people often ask when they first consider multibed acupuncture.

At Anahata, we take great care to create a calm and comfortable environment. The treatment couches are arranged so everyone has their own space, and blinds provide privacy between the beds. Soft music helps to soften the silence, while the quiet conversation between practitioners and patients creates a gentle background sound.

It becomes something of a little bubble.

We all speak quietly and move around the room calmly, checking in with our patients as we work. Occasionally, there may be three acupuncturists working at once, although more commonly there are two practitioners sharing the space.

For some people, this actually makes the experience more relaxing.

One patient once told me, as I was removing her needles, that she had been frightened of the dark as a child and had never liked being sent to bed alone. Treatment rooms that were completely silent and isolated weren’t restful for her. Instead, she found comfort in hearing me quietly padding around the room in my soft shoes and listening to the gentle conversations taking place around her.

It was a lovely reminder that relaxation doesn’t necessarily mean complete silence and solitude. Different environments work for different people.

Personalised acupuncture in a shared space

Although multibed acupuncture is delivered in a shared room, the treatment itself remains individual.

We get to know our patients over a series of sessions and develop a treatment approach based on their needs. At each appointment, we listen to what has changed since the previous treatment and make adjustments where appropriate.

Perhaps there is a new symptom to consider, an existing symptom has improved, or something else has become more prominent. The treatment can then be adapted accordingly.

The needles are only one part of the experience. A large part of an acupuncture session is simply having the opportunity to lie down, switch off and allow the body some uninterrupted time to rest.

Our role is to create a safe, calm environment where that can happen.

One of the biggest benefits: making acupuncture more accessible

One of the key benefits of a multibed acupuncture model is affordability.

Research into multibed acupuncture clinics has found that cost is an important reason people choose this type of treatment. Multibed acupuncture is also a model commonly used in China, where it can help make acupuncture available to more people.

This matters because acupuncture is often most beneficial when people are able to attend a course of treatments rather than having an occasional appointment.

For someone dealing with a long-standing or chronic issue, the cost of individual private treatment rooms can sometimes become a barrier to attending regularly. A multibed clinic can help reduce that barrier while still providing care from a qualified acupuncturist.

The benefits of a community environment

There is another benefit that is harder to measure: the feeling of being part of something.

Research into multibed acupuncture has identified community and atmosphere among the positive aspects reported by patients. Practitioners have also observed that patients can respond particularly well within this type of environment.

There may be something reassuring about knowing that other people are also taking time out of their day to look after themselves.

You don’t have to talk to anyone. You don’t have to interact with the other patients. You can simply settle onto your own couch, close your eyes and enjoy the treatment.

But you’re not completely alone.

For some people, that gentle sense of togetherness is part of what makes the experience so comforting.

Why a course of acupuncture can be helpful

Acupuncture is often approached as a process rather than a one-off treatment.

When you return for several sessions, your practitioner has the opportunity to understand how you respond to treatment and adjust their approach over time. Each appointment provides another opportunity to check in, discuss any changes and consider what your body needs at that point.

The accessibility of a multibed clinic can make attending regularly more achievable.

This can be particularly valuable for people who have been living with symptoms for some time and want to explore acupuncture as part of their ongoing wellbeing.

What should you expect at Anahata’s multibed acupuncture clinic?

If you’ve never experienced multibed acupuncture before, it’s completely understandable to feel a little uncertain about what to expect.

At Anahata, you will have your own treatment space, with privacy provided by blinds between the couches. Your acupuncturist will talk with you about how you’re feeling, explain the treatment and make sure you’re comfortable before leaving you to relax.

The room is shared, but your treatment is personal.

There may be quiet conversation around you, the gentle movement of practitioners and other patients coming and going. For some people, this becomes a soothing part of the experience rather than a distraction.

And if you have questions or concerns, you can always tell your practitioner. We want you to feel comfortable and reassured throughout your treatment.

A different way to experience acupuncture

I feel privileged to work alongside practitioners who share the same vision and values. We support one another, share knowledge and work together to create a welcoming environment for our patients.

Most importantly, the multibed model allows us to offer acupuncture to people who might otherwise find regular treatment difficult to afford. For me, that’s one of the most rewarding aspects of working this way.

Multibed acupuncture may be different from the traditional image of a quiet, private treatment room, but different doesn’t mean less personal. At Anahata, we aim to combine skilled, individualised acupuncture with the warmth and reassurance of a shared healing environment.

If you’re curious about acupuncture but aren’t sure whether a multibed clinic is right for you, we’d be very happy to welcome you and help you feel at ease.
