Raquel Banos is passionate about the power of massage to heal, and she has travelled from Spain to the UK to India in pursuit of ever-increasing knowledge.
We know many of you have been waiting eagerly for massage to return to Anahata – the benefits for relaxation, stress relief, and aches and pains are vast, and many of us look forward to a regular massage as a treat for body and mind. So we’re thrilled to have massage therapists like Raquel Banos working with us again!
We caught up with Raquel to find out more about how she can help you.
Your journey to becoming a massage therapist has involved a lot of literal journeying around the world – tell us about how you came to be here.
I was born in Spain, and from a very early age I wanted to help people. I discovered the power of touch for healing, so I began training as a massage therapist in Spain and began practising in 1998. I moved to the UK in 2000, where I continued to deepen my training. I then went to India to study Ayurveda with a traditional teacher – this expanded and deepened my practice, so that when I returned to the UK I continued to study other types of massage to enable me to fully adapt my treatments to each individual’s needs.
What makes you want to keep studying new forms of massage?
From the very beginning I was passionate about massage, and after so many years I still love it! The human body is so amazing that I am never tired of learning about it and learning different techniques to help others be free of pain.
I am continually broadening my learning: as well as being fully trained in sports massage, deep tissue massage, pregnancy massage, Indian head massage, reflexology, Ayurveda and aromatherapy, I have also followed a few short courses in craniosacral massage, myofascial release, thai table, kinesiotaping and thai hot compresses. I am currently training in traditional Thai yoga massage.
Why would you recommend people try massage therapy?
We all deserve to feel good, happy and free of pain, and to learn to take care of ourselves. In this fast-paced life we all need to release some tension… and if you are experiencing pain, it is not so easy to do this. Massage can help relieve your pain, relax your mind and connect with your body.
What can people expect when they come for a session with you?
This depends very much one their particular needs. I adapt my treatments to suit each individual, and aim to make sure everyone leaves feeling good. If they just want to relax, then we will focus purely on relaxation. But if they have any pain due to bad posture, exercise, work or injury, they may feel a bit of pain at the beginning while we work with their body to get rid of the toxins, and then they will be free of pain and discomfort.
If you have a particular kind of treatment in mind, then you can request that. Otherwise we can discuss your particular situation and requirements and I will come up with the best approach for you.
What are the different treatments that you offer?
Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles. It is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains in concentrated areas.
Remedial massage manipulates the soft tissue of your body for therapeutic effect. It is great for returning your body to normal after injury or for injury prevention.
Aromatherapy harnesses the healing power of essential oils to help you find balance and promote health in your body, mind and spirit. I use 100% natural organic essential oils blended with lots of love to fit your needs.
Reflexology works with the reflex points on the feet that correspond to different body organs and systems. Pressing and massaging them has a beneficial effect on the organs and general health.
Pregnancy massage is a technique involving deep but gentle body work designed to improve your circulation, take some of the strain off your muscles and joints, re-energize and help you relax and sleep well. This is a great opportunity to connect with your baby in a different way… babies love it!
Indian head massage is a very relaxing massage involving face, head, shoulders and upper back. It helps to improve your circulation, boost oxygen to the brain, uplift your spirit, balance your chakras, promote hair growth, and relieve headaches, sinusitis, congestion, insomnia, and lots more.
Therapeutic massage is a very gentle massage to relax your body, mind and spirit. It improves circulation, reduces swelling, dissolves scar tissue adhesion and allows you to connect fully with yourself.
Ayurvedic massage uses essential oils chosen to suit your dosha (your mind-body type). The massage techniques used include tapping, kneading and squeezing, as well as the more traditional massage strokes. The style and flow of the massage will be determined by who you are and what your body needs for balance and wellbeing at the time. Ayurvedic massage will help to detoxify and cleanse, boost your immune system, help with stress relief, improve circulation, increase body awareness and vitality, rejuvenate and repair, promote healthy skin, and allow you to experience deep relaxation.
What do you do when you’re not working?
I love to do yoga and meditation first thing in the morning. I love to go out in nature as much as possible, and I love looking after my little son and daughter – at the moment making them happy is my main hobby!
Raquel offers massage appointments on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Book your appointment here.
