Meet the Team

We caught up with Michael Urwin, one of Anahata’s osteopaths, to understand more about what osteopathy involves and how Michael was drawn to this practice.

Tell us about the therapies you offer at Anahata.

I have 20 years of experience in this practice. Although I am structural in approach, I do take into account a holistic approach, which might include looking at the emotional aspects, diet, posture of the client, amongst other factors.

What are the benefits of your therapy?

The benefits can be varied. It allows the body to be in better alignment, which can allow for a healthier way of moving and living. Osteopathy can help with blood flow lymph drainage and general quality of life.

What first interested you about this practice or motivated you to become a practitioner?

After giving massages to people, I recognised how this was helping people be more relaxed and easier with movement. I decided I wanted to enhance my understanding of bodywork in regards to health, so Osteopathy was the discipline I was drawn to because it has a unique and personal approach.

Why would you recommend people have this therapy?

To ease physical discomfort and mental anguish.

What can people expect when they come for a session with you?

When coming for a session, a case history is taken in regards to the problem, but also other medical conditions are taken into account. There is then a physical exam to ascertain the structures involved. Then the patient may be asked to lay on the couch for stretching and articulation techniques.

Is there anything you’d like people to know about your practice?

Osteopathy is a process – like taking antibiotics, a course may be recommended.  A one-off session can be educational but sometimes two or three are more beneficial as muscles and joints need a bit of re-education.
