What are Systemic Constellations?

Systemic Constellations, more commonly known as Family Constellations, are workshops that are based on the Orders of Love. Systemic Constellations help the person seeking an answer to why they are struggling with whatever they choose to bring to the meeting.

In Systemic Constellations we look at the hidden dynamics in your family system to try to see what’s really happening. Constellations illuminate the relationships between the various elements within systems. Then we are more able to see how things are or were, and to see clearly where we are systemically entangled with people and events, including those that belong to wider familial, historical and cultural contexts. Once a clear picture of systemic dynamics is achieved, order and balance can be restored, with benefits to both the client presenting the issue and other members of their system.

Systemic Constellations are personal development workshops that can be helpful for most issues and questions that people would bring to psychotherapy, including death and guilt, as well as for physical illness.

The workshop is not group therapy, but the group setting is powerful and life-changing. It provides insights from the group and helps to externalise the internal models that feel stuck when a person has encountered a heavy fate.

The Orders of Love

The Orders of Love are not absolute rules but guidelines that come from thousands of years of human experience.

Bert Hellinger suggests that love can flow more freely in a family when the Orders of Love are respected.

In a family everyone is equal but they have different places. Everybody has their rightful place in the family – no matter what! If someone is excluded it has a negative effect on the system. The balance of giving and taking allows love to flow freely: between partners, between parents and children.

There is great love and great pain in every family.

A Systemic Constellation story

A client attended a workshop one day with a sore red eye. He said he had been thinking about his deceased father more than usual, he didn’t know why, but he was also keen to look at how his red eye might be linked.

After a brief chat it came out that sure enough his dad had suffered with eye problems as he got older, as had his paternal grandmother who had in fact lost an eye. The client then remembered his grandmother used to talk about a brother she had had, who had died in the First World War.

We set up people to represent himself, his dad, his grandmother and her brother, then with gentle movements and some healing sentences, things shifted both in his body and in the systemic constellation that we could see playing out in the room.

It would seem that his grandmother had suffered immense grief from her brother dying and had literally struggled to ‘look’ at this pain in her system. Maybe her eye problem was linked to not wanting to look at the missing brother, we can’t be sure but often body pain is linked to trauma further back in the system.

Sometimes these past traumas stick in our systems and get passed down to us. Our ancestors often didn’t have time or space to look at emotional trauma. If we are carrying some of these traumas for them, the systemic constellation method is fantastic for helping us re-balance the system.

As Thomas Hubl says “everything that opens up and enters into relationship can be healed.”
