Case StudiesArvigo Abdominal therapy is not just about massaging your abdomen. We follow a person with acute knee pain and discover how much benefit Maria Dos Santos can give with her abdominal massage.
I’ve been receiving massages from Maria for some years. I was diagnosed with endometriosis 35 years ago and I’m very cautious about allowing anyone to touch my abdomen. My experience is that medical practitioners can be rough, which can stimulate a flare up of pain for several days. But Maria is a specialist trauma informed abdominal therapist and it’s always an uplifting experience where I can set the pace and depth of any touch.
Recently I injured my leg. My knee swelled up and was quite inflamed. I was swimming because the cool water was comforting and eased the pain. I didn’t want a full body massage, but I thought to seek out Maria’s soothing touch.
Every session starts with a castor oil pack on the abdomen. Castor oil is called “Palma Christi” in Latin, which means “Hand of Christ”. Its healing properties have been known for millennia and is really helpful for any inflammatory condition. I’ve used it for decades myself to soothe endometriosis pain and it’s great to have someone else manage the faff of getting it on.
Maria then massages the back, spine and sacrum with detailed attention to any areas of tension. Last of all, she massages the abdomen. The proceeding castor oil and back massage means my belly is relaxed and most able to allow touch.
The sequence is familiar and comforting, but with my leg in so much pain, the massage was incredibly relaxing for my whole body, reducing my leg pain so significantly I felt like Bambi on new legs when I got off the couch.
In Chinese Medicine, the back of the knee (where mine was quite swollen) and the lower back have a strong link, so the attentive massage of my back had an instant calming effect on the inflammation in my knee and was incredibly supportive of my healing journey. The lower back also has associations with the uterus, so is great place to focus attention when there’s menstrual pain – something I’ve suffered from in the past.
I’m glad to say, I’m back on my feet walking normally and able to indulge in Maria’s treatments for stress relief and self care rather than acute pain. I’d highly recommend Arvigo Abdominal Therapy for menstrual issues or other pain in distal areas. It was quite remarkable.
